The Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, also known as the International Motor Show Germany (or IAA), is the world's largest mobility show. A community convention in which technological advancements and concepts for the future of mobility are showcased. Just the place for a brand driven by innovation, new technologies and sustainability to visit.
So, with innovations along the path to climate neutrality as the overarching theme of the summit, we headed to the IAA, along with Polestar 1, Polestar 2 and the Precept.
In Munich, our Polestar Open Space found itself smack in the middle of Königsplatz. The Polestar Open Space brought our visions to the people, letting visitors get up close with the cars while picking the brains of Polestar experts.
But although these cars answer some of the most pressing questions faced by the automotive industry in terms of sustainable design and innovative technology, the IAA is just as much about displaying brand-new products and services. Thus, the Polestar Open Space also featured some surprises: the first working prototype of the Re:Move as well as the new Makka – Polestar edition by CAKE.
As a collaboration between Polestar, Konstantin Grcic (who first conceived of the vehicle), Wallpaper*, Hydro, and CAKE, Re:Move was made to inspire new thinking around electric mobility. The collaboration was launched in March 2021 and made its first virtual appearance at South by Southwest 2021. Radical in design, engineering and ambition, the multi-functional electric transporter presents a sustainable way to carry and deliver goods.
“Good design is inherently sustainable design. Everyone involved in this distinctive project shares the belief that purity can be a driver for sustainability,” says Konstantin Grcic, Re:Move designer.
Equally committed to tackling both pollution and overcrowding is Makka, CAKE’s recently released short-haul city commuter. Designed as a smart and aesthetic solution to growing urban congestion, this lightweight bike possesses the same detail-oriented design that is a CAKE trademark. Makka – Polestar edition by CAKE, unveiled at IAA, is a new interpretation of the instant classic.
“The IAA offers an important forum for the ideas and concepts that actors within the automotive community are coming up with,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “Makka – Polestar edition by CAKE is the next step in our brand collaboration and it gives us a chance to tackle broader mobility challenges. Together with brands like CAKE, we are building momentum towards a more sustainable future.”
Between showcasing our state-of-the-art vehicles and swinging test drives with the new versions of Polestar 2, we took part in several conference debates. To discuss the future of automotive retail, Scott Dicken, European Commercial Operations Director at Polestar, joined a roundtable with thought-leaders from Google and McKinsey among others. And Polestar Head of Design, Maximilian Missoni, took part in a panel session to discuss the impact of design on mobility in politics, culture, economy and responsibility.
When you fuse the forces of innovation, cutting-edge technology and sustainable electric performance, a new automotive future begins to emerge. And that’s what the IAA is all about. Which is exactly why we went there.
The hypothesis: Polestar 2 looks at home in any environment. The reasoning: Polestar 2’s minimalistic, modern design is the logical next step from Polestar 1, which was proven to look good against any backdrop during a previous photo contest. So, to test our hypothesis, we held the contest again, with Polestar 2 as the subject.
Film festivals play out in unique places. Sundance takes place in the picturesque Wasatch Mountains. Toronto’s TIFF Bell Lightbox is a block-long complex which hosts the city’s namesake festival. And the Cannes Film Festival unfolds on one of the world’s most recognisable waterfronts. But for all the features that those venues have, there’s one thing they’re lacking.
