General questions about the Polestar 5
The Polestar 5 is the realisation of the Polestar Precept introduced in 2020. This is our halo car. A sports car and grand tourer merged in one with a 4+1 seating configuration. This is a modern GT with a low nose and roofline and a wide stance.
The Polestar 5 has a charging speed of up to 350 kW on DC and up to 11 kW on AC. It takes 22 minutes to charge the Polestar 5 112 kWh battery from 10% to 80% using a 350 kW rapid DC charger.
The absence of a rear window was a design feature first unveiled in the Precept concept car, and it is now implemented in the Polestar 5, similar to the Polestar 4.
The rear-view mirror has been replaced by a high-definition screen that displays a live camera feed from the car's roof. This system gives the driver an expansive rearward view, with no headrests or passengers in the way – a key advantage over conventional interior mirrors. This screen can also be switched to a traditional mirror mode if the driver wants to check on the rear occupants. While it might require a bit of adjustment, drivers can quickly find it becomes second nature to use.
By eliminating the rear window, we were also able to extend the rear header and expand the panoramic glass roof behind the rear passengers. This creates an incredibly spacious and bright interior environment, enhancing headroom and overall comfort. The Polestar 5 will be our most powerful Polestar to date, with up to 871 bhp of power and 749 lb-ft of Torque. It will accelerate from 0-60 mph in as little as 3.1 seconds for the Performance version and have a top speed of 155 mph (preliminary).
The platform is not shared with other brands or products. The Polestar 5 is built on the brand’s first bespoke EV architecture. Developed in-house, the Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA) is made of anodised, high-strength aluminium that is bonded by heat-cured adhesive. This enables the superior body control, increased safety and torsional rigidity unique to the performance Grand Tourer.
More information will be shared in the first quarter of 2026.
The Polestar 5 will be produced in Chongqing, China, at a Geely plant that is fully electric and has 100% renewable electricity secured. A guiding star for sustainable manufacturing.
Both motors in the Polestar 5 are 3-phase permanent magnetic synchronous motors (PMSM). The PX2 rear electric motor is a Polestar in-house developed electric drive unit that creates the performance which defines the Polestar 5.
Sales of the Polestar 5 will start on 8 September, with first customer deliveries set to take place early in 2026. As with previous vehicles, we are taking a staggered approach to the launch. The initial launch locations for the Polestar 5 will include 23 of our 28 active markets, and availability for customers in other markets will be announced at a later date.
This will be determined when the car is independently tested, which usually takes place with production cars. The Polestar 5 features a body structure made of anodised, high-strength aluminium that is bonded by heat-cured adhesive.
As Euro NCAP is an independent safety performance assessment, we don’t have any timeframes to share on when they will be testing the Polestar 5. All of our cars are developed with the aim of 5-star safety ratings in all independent safety programmes, and we are hopeful to see great results for the Polestar 5 in the future.
