Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath’s recent trip to Beijing doesn’t mark a return to business as usual. It doesn’t mean back to normal. If anything, it’s back to “goodbye normal”.
Attending the 2020 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition in person wasn’t done on a whim. Thomas Ingenlath spent 14 days in quarantine, not to mention the hours of travel time, in order to make a proclamation.
It’s time to move forward. We need to accelerate the move to full-circle sustainability. We need to commit to greater transparency. And we need to do it now.
Of course, this announcement could have been made via video. But given that China is the world’s biggest automotive market, making this statement there has the greatest impact. The ripples are bigger, and travel further, if the splash is made in the middle. Additionally, Thomas’ presence at China’s largest automotive show enabled in-person interviews with press and special events for Polestar owners.
China is also Polestar’s second home, as well as the actual home of all Polestar production facilities. It’s the most fitting place to insist upon industry-wide change. Announcing here that Precept will enter production is our way of showing our commitment to this change we’ve been championing.
And it was that announcement that took top billing. “One day in the future, you can buy this very car. Which is good news, because the Polestar Precept looks wonderful,” opines Top Gear. Jalopnik called the Precept “stunning”, taking particular note of its sustainable materials when saying that “it’s exciting to know that a gorgeous performance car doesn’t necessarily need to be a detriment to the environment.”
Which is, after all, Precept’s whole reason for existing. It’s proof that neither design nor performance need to come at the expense of the environment. Our commitment to our commitment car shows that we’re serious about reducing our environmental impact. That we’re more focused than ever on our determination to improve our shared society. Making this statement at an event which sees EVs take the spotlight more and more is a sign that, for us, we’re ready to tackle the issues our industry is facing. And we’re ready to do it the Polestar way.
Time to get back to “goodbye normal”.

It’s the goal of every carmaker to get people in their cars. There are a seemingly endless number of catchphrases, taglines and mottos in the world of automotive, stretching from the cliché to the incomprehensible. But if one reads between the lines, the message is clear: this car is good. Get in it.
