In-car content reconceived: the Polestar 2 Video Player app

There are drive-in theatres. And there are theatres that you can drive in.

When it came to watching content in a car, drive-in theatres used to be the only option. Though their popularity has waned since their 60s heyday, they’ve recently seen a resurgence as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. But when it comes to the content, one is still at the mercy of the theatre. See what’s playing, or don’t go.

Until Video Player came along.

Video Player is an in-house streaming app for Polestar 2, the beta version of which is now available in all European markets. Content includes news services and national TV broadcasts where available, such as SVT in Sweden, TV2 in Norway, GOPlay and RTBF in Belgium, and tagesschau, Al Jazeera English and BBC Ideas for all European markets. Additional feeds specific to other markets will be added over time. A curated Polestar playlist is also included, to explore the Polestar universe from inside a Polestar 2 (“Polestar-ception”, if you will).

Any data used for streaming is covered by Polestar 2’s data plan, meaning the only limitation is whether or not the car is in motion. Pull over, engage the parking brake, and stream. Audio will continue when the Polestar 2 starts to drive, but video is limited to the stationary in-car experience. Given that this is the beta version, limited functionality and the occasional error are to be expected.

“We have released the new Polestar video app in beta form so that our customers can start to enjoy the benefits of in-car video streaming sooner rather than later,” says Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “We will also continue to add channels in the future, which gives the app huge growth potential since it is realistically able to integrate any web-based streams.”

Drive-in theatres aren’t the only game in town anymore. Now, there are theatres you can actually drive in.
