Creating a digital key

The vehicle's owner can create a primary digital key at any time via settings.

The vehicle's owner can create one primary digital key in the setup guide. Once the primary key has been created, you can share digital keys with family and friends. You can access the guide via the activation email you receive when your vehicle is connected to your Polestar ID, or your vehicle’s center display.

You need to be inside the vehicle while setting up your digital key. You also need to make sure that:
  • the vehicle is stationary and unlocked
  • all the doors are closed
  • both your vehicle and your phone have a stable internet connection1
  • both your vehicle and your phone are updated to the latest software version
  • Bluetooth is enabled on your phone
  • cellular data usage is enabled in the wallet app on your phone
  • you have a valid key with you, such as a key fob or key card
  • you have access to the Polestar ID registered to the vehicle owner's profile.2

Creating a digital key via the center display

Press the vehicle symbol in the bottom bar and go to Settings.
Go to Profiles and select the owner profile.
Go to KeysSet up digital key.

Follow the guide.

You should have received a pairing code via email. When prompted, enter the pairing code into your phone's wallet app.

If pairing is successful, your primary digital key appears in your phone's wallet app. You can now share your digital key with family and friends.

Moving the primary digital key to another phone

If you want to move the primary digital key to another device, such as a new phone, you can do so via the center display. In the owner's profile settings, select your primary digital key and press Change digital key to move the key to the new device.

 Note

Assigning the digital key to a profile

After setting up your digital key, make sure you assign it to one of the user profiles. This way, all of the preferred settings associated with that profile will be applied when you unlock the vehicle. If you don't assign the key to one of the user profiles, the guest profile will be selected whenever you use your digital key.

Sharing limitations

To share your digital key, the person you share it with needs to have a compatible phone.

  1. 1If the vehicle is parked in an underground garage or surrounded by obstacles such as buildings, hills or mountains, the network signal may be blocked or too weak.
  2. 2If you aren't the vehicle owner, you can't create your own digital key. You need to ask the owner to share their digital key with you instead.
