Charging an electric car generally takes less effort than refuelling a conventional vehicle. Instead of periodically heading to the gas station to fill up an almost empty tank, try topping up the battery when the car is parked at home or work, or even at the local shopping centre. The number of public charging stations is growing all the time.

The range a Polestar 2 can achieve in real life is influenced by a number of factors. Once you understand them, you can plan your driving and charging behaviour to improve your range.

    EPA range explained

In North America, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducts a combination of tests to simulate highway, city and suburban driving environments.  The numbers from each test are then combined to create the EPA estimated range.   To make the results easier to understand, the EPS also provides a kilometres-per-gallon equivalent measurement (KPGe) to offer a comparison for gasoline powered vehicle estimates.

    What is real-life range?

Many factors inside and outside an electric car can impact its actual range, such as weight, weather, road conditions, and driving behavior. These factors change across different circumstances, which means that the real-world range will also change. Furthermore, an EV is rarely used until the battery is empty, meaning that the real-world range appears to be slightly lower than the EPA range estimate.

    Maximizing real-life range

The following measures will all have a positive impact on your real-life range: lowering your average speed, removing heavy items from the trunk, pre-cooling or pre-heating the car while it's charging, making sure your tires are properly inflated, and using the full capacity of your battery. Charging along the way also helps extend your range. The Google Maps service in your Polestar 2 can help you find charging stations along your route.

Range anxiety can spike before a road trip. You can extend your real-life range by preconditioning the car's climate before you set off. The integrated Google Maps navigation system can help plan routes and find charging stations along the way. You can even save time on long-distance drives with a neat charging trick.

Hit the road

Both AC and DC charging work with the Polestar 2, meaning that a charge is always within reach. You can regulate the charge current, the duration, the maximum charge level, and much more in the car or via the Polestar app. A 7-metre AC charging cord for normal outlets comes as standard. You also have the option to buy a 4.5-metre AC cord for faster charging at wallboxes or public locations. Additional cable and home charging solutions are also available.
