Sounds from your car

There are several sounds that can come from your car. If you're unsure about a sound your car is making, see if an explanation for it is listed here.

While your car is generally quiet, you might still hear some sounds related to driving and the daily use of your car. Some sounds are relevant to you as a driver and are played to alert you to something or inform you about what's happening. Other sounds aim to alert people outside of the car. Some are simply mechanical sounds, which are normal and nothing to worry about.

Listed here are some common sounds that can be good to know and recognise.

Low-speed driving sound

When driving at low speeds, your car plays an artificial driving sound. This is to alert others to your presence.

Reversing

An exterior warning sound plays when you are reversing. This is to alert others to what's going on. You can hear this sound from inside your car as well.

Engaging the parking brake

A quiet mechanical sound can be heard when the parking brake is engaged after you've come to a standstill.

Remember to take your key

When leaving you car, a sound alert can play and a message can be shown in the display if you forget to take your key with you.

Door handles folding in

When locking your car, the exterior door handles fold in.

Closing the boot hatch

A sound alert plays when you close the boot hatch.
