Just like a refrigerator, the heat pump pulls unwanted heat from the air by evaporating a liquid refrigerant into a gas. By compressing the gas back into a liquid, the temperature rises and the pump redirects useful heat to the passenger compartment.
The heat pump uses a compressor to drive the refrigerant, moving heat from other parts of the car to the passenger compartment. As this process is more efficient than an electric heater, it saves battery power and helps to extend the Polestar 2's real-life range.
