Polestar and IONITY

It’s possible to add something by taking something away.

This is a prime example of how collaboration in the ever-growing free market of public charging infrastructure can be used to benefit our customers.

Polestar 2 is a perfect example. We’ve added convenience by taking away theignition. We’ve increased aerodynamic efficiency by doing away with the mirror frames. And now, we’re taking away the subscriptions, authentication methods and charging tags, along with a good deal off the price, of charging. Thanks to our partnership with Plugsurfing, Polestar 2 owners are now able to charge at any of IONITY’s public fast chargers at a heavily subsidised rate of 0,35 EUR per kWh*.

Convenient charging was already a part of the Polestar experience. The Plugsurfing agreement gives owners access to over 200,000 public charging points in Europe, IONITY included, using one authentication and payment platform regardless of the operator.

“This is a prime example of how collaboration in the ever-growing free market of public charging infrastructure can be used to benefit our customers, much like our recent partnership with ChargePoint in North America,” says Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.

And though this initiative is exclusive to Europe, it demonstrates a model that could potentially work in other markets. It also proves that addition by subtraction works. Remove the charging tags and add convenience. Remove the range anxiety and uncertainty around infrastructure and add immeasurable value to the EV experience.

“Not being limited to our own exclusive charging network means we can benefit from the expansion and evolution of infrastructure as the industry grows,” continues Thomas Ingenlath. “We remain committed to finding more solutions like this for our customers.”

*The subsidised IONITY rate agreement runs for 12 months in total, for all Polestar 2 customers who order their cars before December 31st, 2022. The duration of the offer is 12 months from the handover date. The reduced rate is also accessible via the Plugsurfing app, which needs to be updated to reflect the reduced pricing and must be linked to the same account as the Plugsurfing card supplied with the vehicle. Scanning QR codes on charging stations will not validate the reduced pricing. Please note that the offer does not apply to existing Polestar owners who have already initiated the offering, nor does it grant them an additional 12 months. If you activated your Plugsurfing card before January 2022, six additional months of reduced prices at all Ionity fast-charging stations will be added automatically to your card, for a total of 18 months.
