Integrated Site Closure Plan for the Savannah River Site

Polestar provided technical support and leadership in the development of an Integrated Site Closure Plan and high-level schedule for decommissioning 1003 structures and high level waste tanks and 231 waste sites across SRS through FY 2025.

Polestar personnel provided leadership in the development of an integrated site closure plan for the 1003 structures and high level waste tanks and 231 identified waste sites. This plan identifies the anticipated end state for these structures, tanks, and waste sites, and the order of magnitude costs associated with demolition/remediation of these sites as well as the high level schedule for completing the decommissioning activities by the end of Fiscal Year 2025. In preparation of this plan, a comprehensive database was developed by Polestar to centrally store all information regarding these structures, waste sites, and tanks associated with the plan. Additionally, Polestar staff developed a software application in a Microsoft Access 2000 environment to determine the optimal prioritization and sequencing of decommissioning activities through the end of the project. This application utilizes factors such as net present value, programmatic risk, and environmental, safety, and health risk to determine the appropriate sequencing of work. The results of this application are designed to export to P3 scheduling software where a resource loaded schedule is generated.

The Polestar staff worked with a team of WSRC staff members from several business units including Facility Disposition Projects, Environmental Remediation, and Tank Disposition Project to create this plan.

Continuous on site support was provided by Polestar for this project and supplemented through weekly site visits from Polestar staff from the Richland, Washington, Sacramento, California and Los Altos, California offices.
