Thed Björk and Volvo Polestar Racing claims 2014 STCC title

Thed Björk secured his second consecutive STCC title in the season finale at Mantorp Park as Volvo Polestar Racing claimed the team title for the second straight year. ”The feeling is indescribable! I have fought hard together with my team and they have made an awesome job all year. To crown the season with my third STCC title is incredible and something I value highly in my racing career,” said Björk.
Fredrik Ekblom claimed third position in the championship after winning his 30th STCC race in the very last race of 2014.
”A really nice end to the year after a really fun battle with Thed in the race. I am not pleased with third in the championship, we had too much bad luck to be able to challenge for the title. But I have had the speed to win all year and that is the important thing for me,” said Ekblom.

Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte had a tough weekend where he retired from the first race and finished 13th in the final race, but summarizes the season as positive nonetheless.
”I am not pleased with the weekend in terms of results. But I take the positive points from this season with me as we have taken important steps forward. I scored points in seven consecutive races and claimed a new personal best at Knutstorp. I look forward to 2015,” said Bernadotte.

The Volvo Polestar Racing drivers had a strong season finale where Ekblom was fastest in the first qualifying session and Björk in the second. The last race saw the both fighting hard for the win and it was not until the penultimate corner that the fight was decided with Ekblom fighting his way past Björk.

Thanks to the strong result, Volvo Polestar Racing claims the STCC team championship title for the second consecutive year, beating BMW Dealer Team WestCoast Racing with 98 points.
”Thed Björk joins a rare club of drivers whom have managed to claim two consecutive STCC titles, something both he and the team can be really proud over. The STCC gold and bronze together with the team title is an almost perfect result that we take with us to the 2015 STCC where we aim to be back in at least as strong form,” said Derek Crabb, Motorsport Director of Volvo Cars.

Thed Björk takes one step closer to STCC title after qualifying

Thed Björk took an important step towards the title after having dominated the last STCC qualifying session of 2014 at Mantorp Park together with team mate Fredrik Ekblom. ”Everything has gone according to plan so far and I am really pleased with my lap times. But it is not only up to me. My mechanics have provided me with a perfect car and I have got an engineer who is on top of everything,” said Björk.
Fastest driver in the first qualifying session was Ekblom who scored 25 points to the championship and closes in on BMW driver Fredrik Larsson in the fight for second place in the championship. 11 points separates the both with 50 points left to fight for.
”The car has been amazing and I am happy to have improved my qualifying average further. We have had a lot of bad luck this year, but the speed has been there all the time and I am proud to have qualified best of all this year. I have gained on Larsson, but I am going to do my very best tomorrow and try to win,” said Ekblom.

Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte is going to start from 12th position on the grid for both races, a position he is not pleased with.
”I didn’t get it right this time. We are going to go through the data ahead of tomorrow and see if we can improve something,” said Bernadotte.

Tomorrow starts with the penultimate STCC race of 2014 at 12:35 CET, followed by the last race at 15:25. Björk heads the championship, 43 points ahead of Larsson which means that if Björk finishes sixth in either of the races, he is going to secure the title no matter where Larsson finishes.

STCC title within reach for Thed Björk in season finale

Volvo Polestar Racing and Thed Björk head to the STCC season finale at Mantorp Park with a strong chance at claiming the 2014 Scandinavian Touring Car Championship title, the 19th since the start of the championship in 1996. ”It looks very good, but I take nothing for granted, the season finales during the years have proved to be extremely eventful. I am as usual driving for victory and to claim the title,” said Björk.
Björk heads the championship on 31 points ahead of main title rival and BMW driver Fredrik Larsson with 75 points left to fight for. The reigning champion can become the first driver in nine years to score a second straight title, as well as his third STCC title overall.
”I am of course going to drive smart and stay out of trouble. But the points are on my side, as is the speed so far in the races. I won’t give Larsson anything for free and he needs to step his game up if he is going to catch me,” said Björk.

Team mate Fredrik Ekblom heads to the season finale with a mathematical shot at the title, 61 points behind the leaders with 75 points left, a fact the triple STCC champion is not considering.
”I am just going to focus on securing a strong result in the season finale. I am disappointed over that we have lost so many points at the end of the season due to bad luck despite us having the speed to win in almost all of the races. My goal is to finish the season with at least one victory, then we will see where that takes me,” said Ekblom.

Prince Carl Philip has turned around a tough season start to scoring points in the last seven races, as well as securing personal best with sixth postion.
”We have definitely made progress and I am glad with that. Mantorp Park is a track that I have scored strongly on in the past, so I hope to finish the season on a high,” said Bernadotte.

The STCC Grande Finale at Mantorp Park in Sweden starts with testing and qualifying on Friday, followed by the last two races of 2014 on Saturday where the 2014 STCC champion is going to be crowned.

Video: What’s it like to drive a Volvo Polestar race car?

What is it like to drive an STCC race car? Join Volvo Polestar Racing driver Thed Björk in a unique driver’s eye view video with his 420 hp Volvo S60 Polestar STCC to get a first-hand experience.
”My race car is a beast to drive and you have to be on edge all the time to use its full potential. This video gives you the best possible chance to see what is is like to drive the car at maximum attack,” said Björk.

Björk’s Polestar blue Volvo S60 race car is rear-wheel driven and has got over 420 horsepowers. No driver aids like traction control or anti-lock brakes are allowed, it is all up to the driver and the team to set up the car.

”The video is from testing at Knutstorp together with my engineer Per Blomberg and my mechanics. Our cooperation works really well and is a key part to the success this year. We had a strong race at Knutstorp and our goal is to repeat it at Mantorp Park this weekend to secure the title,” said Björk.

The STCC season finale at Mantorp Park is just a couple of days away and Björk heads the championship by 31 points ahead of main rival and BMW driver Fredrik Larsson with 75 points left to be fought for. The Volvo Polestar Racing driver is in with a shot to secure his second straight STCC title, his third overall.

Strong position lost after pitlane delay at Sandown 500

Volvo Polestar Racing drivers Scott McLaughlin and Alexandre Prémat fought for a top five position in the Sandown 500 V8 Supercars race today but lost vital time after getting blocked in the pits. ”We lost a lot of time in the pits when Alex got held up. It was a shame as the car was really fast. But we will fight back at Bathurst,” said McLaughlin.
The telemetry showed that Prémat lost over 20 seconds during the stop when Oliver Gavin blocked his pit exit.
”We should have finished in the top five easy, but I was stuck behind Gavin. It is the pit lane, it is so tight. I tried to push him twice, but I didn’t want to damage the car. After that I overtook a lot of cars and we had the speed, I am just disappointed about the result. But we will definitely go for the podium at Bathurst,” said Prémat.

The second Volvo Polestar Racing drive duo of Robert Dahlgren and Greg Ritter had an eventful race, climbing three positions from 20th on the grid to 17th over the finishing line.
”The race was fairly good, we had better pace today and it looks promising for the coming rounds. Greg did a great job and climbed a couple of spots as well. I look forward to Bathurst,” said Dahlgren.
”We found more speed overnight which was good. We had an eventful race with a few clashes, dive bombing and rubbing of door panels going on. Robert managed to stay reasonably consistent, roll on Bathurst,” said Ritter.

Sandown 500 was the first of three endurance races, with the legendary Bathurst 1000 race coming up on October 9-12th.
”The incident in the pits was unfortunate, but we take the positives with us that the pace is there to fight for the top positions in the endurance races as well. We are looking forward to the Bathurst race, an event with a strong history for Volvo where we hope to give the top drivers and team a good run for their money,” said Christian Dahl, owner of Polestar.

Solid start to Sandown 500 weekend for Volvo Polestar Racing

Volvo Polestar Racing got a solid start to the Sandown 500 weekend, the first endurance V8 Supercars race of 2014, with Scott McLaughlin and Alexandre Prémat securing fourth on the grid for the main race tomorrow. ”It has been a good day for us. Alex did an awesome job and we have made some leaps with the car. It is really good to see that it is all coming to fruition. Hopefully we can win the race tomorrow, I think we are fast enough,” said McLaughlin.
McLaughlin qualified third ahead of the first qualifying race in which Prémat crossed the line in fourth position.
”I got a really good start and had a good fight with Jonathon Webb. It was good to finish the race and get the grid spot for Scott in the second race. We have a really good chance to get onto the podium tomorrow,” said Prémat.

Dahlgren managed 22nd position in qualifying, nine tenths of a second from pole position, which Ritter improved by two positions to 20th position in the first qualifying race.
”Not too bad a day today. We struggled a bit with the setup and the car went away in the race. But we will try to change it for tomorrow and see what we can do,” said Ritter.

The result of the first qualifying race determined the grid for the second race that in its turn determines the grid for the main race of 500 kilometers tomorrow. McLaughlin crossed the line in fourth position and Dahlgren in 21st position in the second qualifying race, positions they will keep for the grid tomorrow.
”Greg did a good job today, he made up a couple of spots in the race then lost a couple towards the end. I did basically the same, made up some spots but then lost towards the end of the race. We need to look at that tomorrow, but in pure speed I think we have a good package. We just need to be a bit more consistent,” said Dahlgren.

The 29th V8 Supercars race of 2014 starts at 13:40 local time tomorrow which runs over 161 laps and includes pitstops with mandatory driver changes.

Sandown 500 kicks off endurance races for Volvo Polestar Racing

The first of three V8 Supercars endurance races starts this weekend with the Sandown 500, meaning a completely different format and challenge for Volvo Polestar Racing drivers Scott McLaughlin and Robert Dahlgren. ”The endurance races brings a whole new element to the racing with longer races and a co-driver, something I really look forward to. I think we are going to be strong, especially at Sandown which is a track that will suit us with fast turns and long straights,” said McLaughlin.
Two co-drivers join the Volvo duo: Frenchman Alexandre Prémat, who will share car with McLaughlin, and Australian Greg Ritter, who will share car with Dahlgren. The four drivers prepared ahead of the coming endurances races with a test day at Winton.

”The test went pretty well and we have made a couple of improvements. It was also about getting our co-drivers comfortable in the car. They were reasonably fast and got plenty of time in the cars. I am looking forward to race together with my mate Alex again,” said McLaughlin.

”The test at Winton was productive and if we can utilize the improvements from the test, then it looks really promising for us. I look forward to race with Greg, it feels really good for me as a rookie to pair up with an experienced co-driver,” said Dahlgren.

The endurance races at Sandown, Bathurst and Gold Coast are included in the Pirtek Enduro Cup where the driver and co-driver combination that accumulates the most championship points are crowned champions.

The Sandown 500 race weekend features two qualifying races on Saturday where the co-drivers, Prémat and Ritter, drive the first race on their own and the second race with McLaughlin and Dahlgren racing on their own.

The finishing order of the first race determines the grid positions for the second race. The finishing order of the second race determines the grid positions for the main race on Sunday of 500 kilometres where all four drivers take part in the race with mandatory driver changes during the pit stops.

Thed Björk extends STCC lead after victory at chaotic Solvalla

Thed Björk claimed an important victory in a chaotic STCC weekend at Solvalla and extends the championship lead with just one race weekend left of the 2014 season. ”I am very proud and happy for the entire team to claim this victory, a perfect one! The season finale is going to be very tough though and the title fight is far from over, but my position is really good after this win,” said Björk.
Both STCC races offered a lot of drama and crashes where Fredrik Ekblom was eliminated in the first race after sustaining damage to his oil cooler due to an incident ahead of him. The second race saw the triple STCC champion securing fourth position, just 83 thousands of a second from third.
”I am not pleased with this weekend. Göransson spun right ahead of me in the first race and there was no room for me to go, that is where my car was damaged. I had good speed in the second race, but there wasn’t enough laps unfortunately. I’m going to go flat out in the season finale which takes place on one of my very favorite tracks,” said Ekblom.

Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte had an eventful weekend where he secured his best ever STCC qualifying result with ninth in the 16-car field and followed that with two tenth places in the races.
”I am very pleased with my result in qualifying. Both races were messy unfortunately, but I am of course happy to score points in both races which was my goal ahead of the weekend,” said Bernadotte.

Björk has pulled up a 31-point lead over BMW driver Fredrik Larsson thanks to his victory today ahead of the season finale at Mantorp Park in two weeks time where 75 points remain to be fought for.
”We knew that the Solvalla weekend was going to be a challenge as the circuit is so short and tight. It was unfortunate that Fredrik Ekblom and Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte were hampered by incidents, but we are of course more than pleased over Thed Björk’s victory and his position ahead of the finale,” said Derek Crabb, Motorsport Director of Volvo Cars.

Thed Björk unstoppable in STCC qualifying at Solvalla

Thed Björk was unstoppable in both STCC qualifying sessions at Solvalla which means pole position for the second race and 25 points to the championship. ”Everything worked perfectly. I got my laps just right and the car reacted just the way I wanted to changes. The feeling from last year when I won here is back,” said Björk.
Fredrik Ekblom was third fastest in the first qualifying session and fifth in the second, gaining five points on BMW driver Fredrik Larsson who holds second place in the championship. But Ekblom was still not pleased.
”I just didn’t get it right, this was our worst qualifying session of the year. I am never pleased until I am fastest, but third is okay in the first qualifying session. I am going to reload and be ready for tomorrow,” said Ekblom.

Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte had his best ever qualifying result with ninth, eight tenths of a second from Björk, in the Q1 session which means that he is going to start second in the first race thanks to the reversed grid.
”I am pleased with the result, especially as this is my first time ever on the track. The races will be interesting tomorrow, a great challenge,” said Bernadotte.

The reversed grid means that Björk is going to start tenth in the first race and Ekblom eighth. The drivers are going to start according to the results of Q2 for the second race, with Björk on pole, Ekblom fifth and Bernadotte ninth.

The first race starts at 12.05 CET tomorrow and is broadcasted live at www.svtplay.se.

STCC title decider gets closer at Solvalla

Classic Swedish trotting track Solvalla gets transformed into a racing circuit this weekend where Volvo Polestar Racing takes part in the penultimate STCC weekend of 2014.
Reigning champion Thed Björk claimed the championship lead in the last race at Knutstorp and has got a clear goal ahead of this weekend.
”There was no one able to stop me at Solvalla last year and for me there is nothing else but continuing in the same way this weekend. This circuit suits me perfectly,” said Björk.

Team mate Fredrik Ekblom had an opposite weekend to Björk at Knutstorp two weeks ago when almost everything went wrong in the two races. The rescue was the points from qualifying where Ekblom once again proved that he is the fastest driver so far this year with pole position i half of the qualifying sessions and second as his worst position.
”We have had a bit too much bad luck so far this year. But my focus remains on winning the championship. I need to score as good as possible to succeed with that and that is what I am driving after this weekend,” said Ekblom.

Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte had his best ever STCC race weekend at Knutstorp with sixth and seventh. A tough challenge awaits him this weekend as he has not raced at Solvalla before.
”I have only driven one test session at Solvalla previously, so the challenge is great. But I am strengthened by the results from Knutstorp and my goal is to continue to score points,” said Prince Carl Philip.

Two race weekends and four race heats remain of the 2014 STCC. A total of 150 points are left to be fought for. Björk heads the championship with three points over BMW driver Fredrik Larsson while Ekblom is third, 28 points behind the leaders.

This weekend’s races at Solvalla is going to be extra demanding as the biggest so far field of the year awaits the drivers on the tightest track of the calendar.
”Solvalla is an extremely important part of the final championship sprint and a tough one as the track is tight and we have got new drivers joining the championship. There is a lot at stake this weekend in the fight for the title,” said Björk.
