Volvo Polestar Racing drivers Thed Björk and Fredrik Ekblom topped the STCC qualifying session at Knutstorp in the south of Sweden from start to end. Björk was fastest in the first qualifying session which means 25 points to the championship while Ekblom was fastest in the second qualifying session which means pole position for the second race.
It was extremely tight between the two Volvo drivers in the first session where a mere five thousands of a second separated the both. Thanks to the points awarded in the first qualifying session, Ekblom has gained three points on championship leader Fredrik Larsson, who qualified third, and Björk gained ten points.
”I am very pleased with the car and especially the first session. I made a small mistake in the second session, but second position is still good and to get 25 points is extremely important,” said Björk.
Ekblom responded in the second qualifying session where he beat Björk to pole with close to two tenths of a second, meaning an all Volvo front row for the second race.
”The test work has never worked this well before, the car reacted just as we wanted on the changes and we made a lot of progress. I am really happy over the position we have got ahead of the two races tomorrow,” said Ekblom.
Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte had technical problems with the gearbox and the mechanics were forced to work hard to get the car ready between testing and qualifying. With just seconds left ahead of the start of the qualifying session, Prince Carl Philip was able to join the track and is going to start 12th for both races.
”The team made an amazing effort to get me out in time, a big thanks to them. But I am not pleased with my position in the qualifying session, but we lost a lot of important time due to the technical issues and I made a step in the right direction in terms of lap times from testing to qualifying,” said Prince Carl Philip.
The first race of the weekend starts 12:10 CET tomorrow where Björk starts eighth and Ekblom seventh because of the reversed grid system. The second race starts 14:05 CET where Ekblom starts from pole and Björk from second.
