Fredrik Ekblom recorded the fastest ever lap time by an STCC car in qualifying at Falkenberg today. The triple STCC champion was fastest by no less than three tenths of a second on the short and fast circuit, something also providing him with 25 points for the championship. ”It feels awesome. The car has worked great from the very first lap of the first test this weekend,” said Ekblom.
Ekblom was fastest in both qualifying sessions, something meaning tenth position on the grid for the first race due to the reversed grid and first place for the second race.
”I’ll just go with it and take the challenges as they come, we have seen in the previous races that things get crazy in the first race with the reversed grid,” said Ekblom.
Thed Björk had two tough test sessions, followed by puncture in the first qualifying session and fifth as result. The second session saw the double STCC champion improving his time to third overall, two tenths from pole position.
”I tried as hard as I could, but Fredrik drove like a demon today. Third for the second race is something I have to be pleased with and my goal is to regain some points on the two ahead of me in the championship,” said Björk.
Björk lost one place in the championship to third after the points from the first qualifying session. Ekblom on the other hand gained one place to second, just five points behind leading Fredrik Larsson who starts behind him in both races.
Prince Carl Philip Bernadotte is going to start eleventh in both of the races, a position he was not pleased with.
”I am not pleased, we lack some speed in order to challenge for the top ten where my goal is. But we’ll be back for tomorrow,” said Bernadotte.
The first race tomorrow stats at 12:40 CET.
